Spanning the Twitterverse: MLS Challenge, NFL Twitter & Tweet of the Day

What began as a simple challenge last Monday, turned into a free-for-all throughout the week. The follower challenge between Teal Bunbury of Sporting KC and Juan Agudelo of the New York Red Bulls. The most influential athlete on Twitter, Chad Ochocinco (aka Chad Johnson), led the way in helping Teal to gain followers. To remind everyone, here were the early totals on Monday:

@TealBunB: 5129 followers @ 12:30 / 6971 followers as of 6:28pm

@juanagudelo17: 5184 @ 12:30 / 6739 followers as of 6:30pm

As of post-time, here are the ‘happy totals’:

Me thinks young Mr. Agudelo will be looking like this soon eh?

Follower update:

When the NFL draft started the other day, when we still had the NFL that is, I posted about many of the potential 1st & 2nd round draft picks with their Twitter handles & follower numbers. One of the names listed was former Alabama running back and Heisman trophy winner, Mark Ingram. Without looking at all of the Twitter accounts, mostly because I’m too lazy on a Saturday night, I am calling him the big winner for Twitter follower gains. Here’s the lowdown:

@Mark_Ingram22: 21,539 followers Thursday morning / 36,981 tonight

That’s a gain of over 15,000 in just a few days. Must be lots of New Orleans fans out there or he gained new ones because of waiting for so long to be picked. Either way, I wish him the best.

Okay, I’m going to go against my own rule for this night only. Do you ever wonder what makes people tick? Sometimes when I’m reading tweets, I wonder what in the world happened in a person’s life to make them say(tweet) the things they say. It just boggles my mind. Take the announcement for the EA Sports Madden 2012 cover announcement today. You would have thought that Michael Vick or Peyton Hillis just gave us a copy of their birth certificate or something. 

For those not in the know, EA Sports was holding a “fan” vote to determine who would be on their next cover of Madden. The last two finalists were Cleveland Browns running back, Peyton Hillis, and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, Michael Vick. I’m not here to get into the whole Michael Vick “redemption” story. My take is from a Twitter perspective. On TweetDeck, I have the ability to do a live, or real-time, search on just about anything. So, of course, I decided to search “Vick”. I’m not sure how to interpret all of it, other than….well….oh, just read for yourself:

That is such a small sampling of the search. My final take: Is it any wonder our country is where it is sometimes?
