The Unfollow

When I discuss Twitter with people, one of the things that they are most surprised about is when I tell them about behaviors of sports fans. In particular, they are surprised when fans “have” to announce they are unfollowing someone.

In the early days of this blog, I would write about the unfollow more than I do now. Unfollow is part of the “Twitter experience”. So much so that I made it part of my blog opening (an ode to ABC’s Wide World of Sports):

People will unfollow for a variety of reasons. Follow and unfollow. Bringing that into the sports realm, there’s a certain segment of fans who feel the need to tweet the person they are unfollowing telling them of such. As I stated earlier, I wrote about it quite a few times early on in my blog:

Spanning the Twitterverse: An Unfollow, A Salute & Fun Tweets

Another Unfollow Request? No Just A Twitter Block

Another Unfollow: So Much Fun!

I’ve written more than just those, some in great detail. It came to a point that I didn’t want to write about it anymore. It grew tiresome. And yet the unfollow announcements continue:

*

As I’ve watched the dynamics between sports fans and media or sports fans and athletes, I continue to be amazed. Twitter, more so than Facebook or Google+ I believe, provides a unique insight into human behavior. It is the marriage of “basement blogger” with “anonymous message board commenter” as well as “loudmouth sports bar know-it-all”.

Media can write about it all they want but they’re media. Fans want to have a voice and Twitter provides it, fortunately (in my case) or unfortunately, as in the case of this post:

Spanning the Twitterverse: Fans Going Too Far

Will we sports fans learn? Read this next tweet and tell me what you think:

*

There is no room in this life or sports for ridiculous behavior like I’ve seen on Twitter. Sadly it is a reflection of what goes on in society all around the world. We can hope and pray. But, until that changes, what we see on Twitter will continue.

I’m a pretty reasonable person. Thankfully nobody in my family reads this blog, otherwise they “might” beg to differ on that statement. Seriously though, I try to look at the opposing viewpoint and if you’re still wrong, I’ll let you live in your ‘wrongness’ (is that a word?).

That said, if you believe you’re right (when you’re clearly wrong), I won’t tell you unless I am overwhelmingly consumed by my evil twin who says: I MUST BE RIGHT. I MUST HAVE THE LAST WORD. I AM RIGHT. (I kid, I kid. Maybe.)

If it just so happens that you annoy me with a tweet-opinion, I’m not going to TELL you that I’m unfollowing you. I’m just going to unfollow! It’s short, sweet and painless. But for reasons that I have yet to fathom, people insist on telling people they’re unfollowing them. For what, I ask? Do they think they’ll be BEGGED to stay….via a tweet? If they unfollow, they’re not going to see it anyway. Or do they simply want the attention? Good grief.

The majority of what I see are tweets from fans to “famous” people in the sports world. The fan gets his “panties in a bunch” and tweets his unfollow in a snit. Oy!

And so it is that I share some unfollows with you below. One of which is okay by me as he didn’t call anyone out by name. You’ll see what I mean. If you see a link in a tweet, please click on it to get the entire message. Thank you.

TWEET OF THE NIGHT

Occasionally, you’ll come across a hashtag (#) that is pretty good. I’m fairly certain this one has gone around Twitter before but no matter….there are still funny ones to be found. The hashtag tonight is #ReplaceWordInQuoteWithTweet. If you’re on Twitter, enter that hashtag in your Search box and you will find some LOL ones. While I didn’t find one that pertained to my post topic, I did find the one below that made me laugh late tonight. For that, it gets Tweet of the Night

Spanning the Twitterverse: Hairy Tweets

Not quite sure what was up with sports folks talking about hair yesterday but these two both were tweeted today. One was a compliment and the other caused an UNFOLLOW.

A day late and a dollar short. True, these tweets are from yesterday but the reaction to the Casey Anthony verdict in the Twitterverse took precedence over these. Not to say, though, that these aren’t worthy because they are. Thus, I post.

TWITTER SPASMS?

I simply liked this for the “spasm” reference about Twitter.

———————————————————————————————

UNFOLLOW? DO NOT ANNOUNCE

I’ve talked about my distaste for announcing that you’re unfollowing someone. I continually shake my head (smh) when I see things like this. Do people really think the person you’re unfollowing cares? No. I almost feel like going all Valley Girl when I see it: “AS IF!”

YES MR DOCKETT, SIR

Remember last week when Darnell Dockett live tweeted his encounter with police? Will this help?

BLAME IT ALL ON MCCOURT

Frank McCourt, who has pretty much made the Dodgers a laughingstock, will now be blamed for everything.

NFL MEDIA WITHDRAWALS

Another definitive sign that the media is tired of this lockout:

ONLY IN BASEBALL

Never let it be said that McCain doesn’t listen to his constituents on Twitter. The campaign to get Ian Kennedy as the extra selection took on a new twist when we get this from Todd Walsh on Twitter asking for McCain’s “endorsement”: McCain Casts Vote For Kennedy.

TWEET OF THE DAY

Yesterday it was announced that St Louis Cardinals first baseman, Albert Pujols, would be available to return to the Cardinals lineup after recovering from an elbow injury. That prompted this tweet from Minnesota sportswriter, Aaron Gleeman. (You can see why it was tweet of the day right?)

As I’ve said before, I love Twitter. I love the communication factor. Yes, you can communicate instantly with anyone around the world, but what fascinates me is what’s behind the tweets. It’s the ‘what makes people tick’ factor. Why do people tweet what they tweet? Particularly when it comes to sports, it can be a very opinionated forum. There’s a reason for those opinions and that’s why I always wonder why people tweet what they do, why do people follow the people they do, why don’t they follow other people, same goes for replying or retweeting some but not others. It would seem to be a great study for a psychology or sociology research project. Truly fascinating.

The point of all I just said was this tweet below. I ask: Why do you need to tweet that you’re unfollowing????

On to other tweets…

A SALUTE

Tennis is a sport that I’ve actually loved to watch since I was a kid. I went with a friend and her family up to their cabin in Northern Arizona for a couple of weeks around the fourth of July. They happened to be big tennis fans so they watched Wimbledon. I was hooked. Through the years, I have tried to watch at least a little bit of it. And I’ve come to associate Wimbledon with Dick Enberg. He is a pro’s pro; one of the best. And this is his last year of announcing at Wimbledon. He is the voice of the San Diego Padres and tennis takes him away from those duties. He is so multi-talented when it comes to announcing; great at every thing he does. Jay Bilas said it best today:

FUN TWEETS

Normally I try to save these for Fridays but there were a few fun tweets today to share. Though not worthy enough to be called TWEET OF THE DAY, they did make me chuckle nonetheless. Thus, I share:
